When we first see WindClan, they are inmediately dirven out by ShadowClan away from the moors. Mudclaw is a young warrior at this point. After hearing stories of his father's death by ShadowClan's claws, he witnesses his clan being forced to leave, with neither ThunderClan or RIverClan standing up for him. Later on ThunderClan tried to lead them back.
But their leader sent two unexperienced warriors. In the Darkest Hour, WindClan is invaded once again by freshly-formed TigerClan, and an apprentice is murdered in the leader's jaws. You might want to begin to see why they aren't as kind and welcoming as ThunderClan. In The New Prophecy, Mudclaw becomes deputy. It is noted that he is in fact quite good at running the clan with Tallstar, because Mudclaw's agressive behaviour balances Tallstar's calm and maybe guillible leadership.
He's loyal to his clan, and cares about his apprentice Crowpaw since he was a kit. He also mentored Webfoot, who was a loyal warrior up to his death and supported Mudclaw in the rebellion. He appears be a good mentor. Mudclaw is hard to get with and somewhat arrogant, but he isin't evil. When Tallstar dies, it is mentioned he is very old. He sees a vision of a battle with a brown tabby at the top, deducing this to the Mudclaw. Homever, hallucinations in dying elderly people are nothing new, and nothing suggests that this was a vision from Starclan.
In addition, Onewhisker and Mudclaw have matching pelts, one only lighter than the other, wich means it was likely Onewhisker the one in the vision. Mudclaw has known Tallstar all his life, he was partially raised by him. Throghout the turbulence of WidnClan being driven out, TigerClan, and the forest falling apart, Tallstar was there to soothe Mudclaw. And now in his last moment Tallstar turns against him.
Of course he will feel betrayed. It is easy to understand. And the thing that drove Mudclaw's actions to be what they where? That it was ThunderClan the one pushing Onewhisker to be leader.
